About IAS

The Institute of African Studies (IAS) is the first and oldest semi-autonomous research institute of the University of Ghana, Legon. It was set up in 1961 by Ghana’s first President, Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, as a multi-disciplinary and inter-disciplinary institute with the mandate to conduct research into all aspects of the arts and the social sciences in Africa. The Institute carries out this mission by engaging in the regeneration of Africa and her people through knowledge production, dissemination, application and preservation.

Institute of African Studies Launches Book of Biographical Essays

The Institute of African Studies has launched a book titled Building the Nation: Seven Notable Ghanaians, the first of a series of biographical essays to be published by the Institute. The book which was authored by fourteen faculty members of the Institute, was edited by Dr. Mercy Akrofi Ansah and Prof. Esi Sutherland Addy with a foreword by Emeritus Professor Ivan Addae Mensah, a former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ghana.

Call for Applications: The Kwame Nkrumah Chair in African Studies

The University of Ghana, Legon, is pleased to invite applications for the position of Occupant of the Kwame Nkrumah Chair in African Studies, to begin August 1, 2020.

The Kwame Nkrumah Chair in African Studies was established at the Institute of African Studies, University of Ghana in honour of Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, Pan African luminary and Ghana’s first president, for his contributions  to the intellectual life of the African World, and for his projection of Africa on the world stage.
