The Publications Unit was established at the founding of the Institute of African Studies to support one of the Institute’s core mandates – to publish its research findings and those of its affiliates and associates. The Unit is headed by a Publications Officer supported by a Publications Assistant who minds the Institute’s bookstore.
The Publications Unit is responsible for the production of the Institute’s key publication, the Contemporary Journal of African Studies (CJAS), formerly the Research Review (RR). The Research Review was published from 1965 – 2012 and came to be the outlet for the research findings of Africanists not only from Ghana and Africa, but Europe, North America, and Asia, as well as occasionally the Caribbean and South America. CJAS is a peer-reviewed international journal with two issues in a year, each consisting of between five and seven articles. Both paper and online editions of the journal are available. Papers and contributions are welcome and may be submitted at https://journals.ug.edu.gh/index.php/cjas/index
In addition to our journal, the Publications Unit supports the publication of other works by the Institute, its Fellows and students, and occasional guests. These have included conference proceedings, biographies, occasional papers, monographs, and the AngloGold Ashanti lectures in business, as well as the Kwame Nkrumah Chair inaugural lectures, both held under the auspices of the Kwame Nkrumah Chair
Available in the Institute’s bookstore are current books and other items produced by Fellows of the Institute, Visiting scholars and professors, and other associates and others. The store is located in the Kwame Nkrumah complex and open on weekdays from 8 am to 5 pm. Queries regarding the Institute’s publications may be sent to iaspubs@ug.edu.gh
