Laryea Akwetteh is a Ghanaian music scholar and composer. He holds degrees in Music (with Drama) and African Studies from the University of Ghana, Legon, where he also serves as an Assistant Lecturer. He is also an experienced performer on musical instruments such as the Akan Seperewa (studied with the legendary Osei Korankye), the Lobi xylophone –gyil– (studied with Maestro Aaron Sukura Bebe), Mande Kora (with the Mande Griot Lasso Diabete), and the Korean Haegeum (studied with Jang Che Gyeon of the National Theatre of Korea). Akwetteh’s research focuses on traditional festivals, "anti-everyday life", and urban West African cities. His recent journal article ‘The road is blocked’: notions of sound and silence in the Ga Hɔmɔwɔ festival, a Teshie perspective, was published online in 2023 by Journal of the Musical Arts in Africa (JMAA) as part of the ICTM-SGAM Special Issue Vol. 19. Akwetteh is currently pursuing a PhD in Ethnomusicology at the University of Toronto, Canada.
